Skins Calendar

We are in high season for golf in El Tigre. We  see on the calendar that several Skins’ events have reached or will soon reach the maximum players.

There will likely be more than 24 players interested in playing in each event. There is a waiting list, but it would be disappointing to play Skins with an incomplete roster because somebody forgot to sign out.

For respect to other players, it is important that everyone manages their own calendar carefully. Sign in only if you plan to play and sign out as soon as you know you won’t be playing. This simple guideline allows other players to plan their golf schedules.

If you are on the waiting list, you want to plan your own schedule. If you know only a couple days before that you can play Skins, you maybe already have other plans. And foursomes could become threesomes, and a complete roster becomes incomplete in Skins. Signing out as soon as possible shows consideration for other players and helps to have a complete roster.

Major change in Skins Game format

When the Skins Game began about twelve years ago, all players played from blue tees and had a handicap of 10 or less. Over the years, as the players grew older, those whose combined age and handicap of 83 were allowed to play from gold tees. Players with a handicap of 18 or higher were also permitted to play, but only one stroke per hole was counted for Skins.

Today, over 40% of Skins Game participants would have a handicap of 18 or more on the white tees. Today players can play from a variety of tees, from blue to red and all combinations in between. Recently, combo tees were added, and new tees have been rated for men, which will allow over 90% of players to play with a handicap of 18 or lower using these newly rated tees.

After consulting with several Skins players over the past few weeks, it has been decided to try a new format for the Skins Game for one month. The goal of this change is to use a fairer format for players of different  playing ability competing from different tees. For the month of January, we will use 100% of everybody’s handicap with a maximum of 36. Afterward, we will evaluate whether to continue or not with this format.

New rules effective January 1st

Skins

Only net scores will be considered for awarding a skin on each hole. The player with the lowest net score will be awarded a skin if he is the only player with that net score, regardless of his handicap.

Team games

As is currently the case, net scores will be considered for the team score.

When a team has only three players, instead of using Pepe, a player’s score from another team will be randomly selected to complete the foursome.

Scoring

The scores recorded on the golf cart screens will be considered the official score. Score cards will be used as a backup.

2026 Gringo Classic

Hola El Tigre Members.

The time is upon us once again for the planning and organizing of the 2026 Gringo Classic.

It seems like yesterday, however it was a short 10 years ago when a group of us after a round of golf came up with this crazy idea to start a Canada vs USA Ryder cup style event, fast forward 10 years and the final planning stages are being done for the upcoming event being held February 24,25 2026.

Over the years there has been its fair share of changes but the concept has stayed the same, a match play event between Team Canada vs Team International.

As has become a tradition we will start our event with a draft night on Monday Feb 23, where the captains Markus Gmelin and Jeff Gayle representing Team International, and Don Marshall along with Ken Wither representing Canada will create the pairings for the 2 day event. This event with be hosted once again at Vallarta beer gardens. Beer and appy’s will be provided.

Day 1 will be a 4 ball event with a shot gun start at 9 am followed immediately after with a putting contest at the putting green where a few beers will be provided. Cash prizes for the top 3 finishers.

Day 2 will be individual matches again with a shot gun 9 am start followed by a provided lunch and couple of beers provided as well as the presentation to the winning team.

The registration fee is 1,500 pesos which covers the draft night food and beer, the putting contest entry fee and provided beer, the 2nd day lunch and beer, KP prizes both days, as well as some very impressive tee gifts.

To register please see Ross McDonald, Francis Bast, or myself. Act fast as spots are filling up, we are restricted to 72 participants (36 per team). Registration is open to all members, as well as guests of members. Registration closes Feb 10, 2026.

On behalf of the organizers of this event we would like to wish all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Kindest Regards

Alan Bayliss

Before the season, please clck here to remind yourself the rules of our Skins Game.

Brad St-Pierre needs to handle his business this season. One of his stores was closed because a nearby fire caused heavy smoke and water damage.  So, I will be back as the league manager for this season. With help from a few players and everyone’s collaboration, we will have a great 2025-2026 season.
